99 Ford Windstar LX Battery Draining?
We are troubleshooting the reason why the battery keeps draining when the van sits for a day. We have ruled out the alternator. We also have a new battery. How do you test to see if it’s the cruise control as some people suggested there’s a faulty cruise control on these vans?
The correct way to test for this is to take the keys out of the ignition, open the driver’s door, and with a screw driver, manually close the door latch completely so you can still access the vehicle and the instrument cluster never sees the door open. Wait for 20 minutes, this allows the modules to “sleep”, The next portion is very tricky, connect an ammeter to the “-” battery connector and the other lead to the negative battery post, a tool called a “battery disconnect tool” is most useful in this procedure, but it can be done without it with careful skills. you must disconnect the battery terminal but you cannot let the ammeter disconnect or the modules will “wake up” and you have to start all over. once you have the battery only connected through the ammeter, you simply pull out the fuses one by one until the meter reads zero amps, that fuse is the one that is pulling the draw. Keep in mind that the keep alive memories in the pcm and the stereo draw up to .5 amps sometimes higher. When I say pull the fuses, I mean you cannot reinstall them until you are done and no longer need to test, so in this case you want to make sure you know where they go back. Here’s where the owner’s manual will help you, find out what components are powered by that fuse and that will narrow down the search. Good luck and don’t give up.
