Alaska Vacation — any good travel tips?

Next summer I want to travel to Alaska. I’m not really interested in a cruise or group tour, I especially enjoy national parks and doing my own exploring (hiking, kayaking, driving, etc).
Anyone have any good travel tips to get the most out of a ~7 day trip? I’m a single male in mid 20′s and would probably travel with a few friends.

Living in Alaska, myself, there are quite a few things you might want to take into consideration. Like for instance, for the best weather, you will probably want early summer (i.e. may and june). The later in the summer it gets, the worse the weather gets, generally. July and August are typically rainy. You could also try contacting the Chamber of Commerce or Visitor’s Bureau in some of the towns/cities; they are very helpful and respond quickly. You mentioned hiking and national parks…Skagway and Denali National Park are both beautiful, but fairly far apart. In Skagway you have the (Gold Rush) Chilkoot Trail. Of course, in Denali, Mt. McKinley. In and near Skagway you have glaciers and fjords that you can see. Those would be group things, but they are small (glacier ~6-12 people, fjords are up to 40-ish).

*Note: way too many people have the tendency to fall into that old idea that because it’s Alaska, it’s going to be cold. This is not true. This past summer places were having temperatures 70+ for most of the summer (April – July, August got worse). Point being, don’t just pack heavy/warm clothes. Although, you will want a few warmer items for higher on the mountains or on the occasional colder days.
