What are some Alaskan attractions?
Please stick to one city, thanks.
My brother and I are planning out a week to Alaska. We are kind of clueless, but here’s what we are looking for in a vacation spot;
-wildlife surrounding
-free parking
-make it a bit in the south, we live in New York and we don’t have much money
Thanks for everything
I agree you really only have time for one place, and picking it is the hard part, cause this state is huge
http://www.tongass-seis.net/media/tong_USA.html
And you have not really given me much info to work with here, but here’s some ideas that might help.
One good place to look for current prices on lodging, availability and price of camping areas (and some are free) and restaurants is the Milepost (Alaska travel bible)
I assume you want the south because you are flying to Anchorage. if you aren’t renting a car your limited to places you can get to by train. Other then chartered tour buses I don’t think there are public buses that run between cities.
If that is all true, how about Seward, the trip down there is beautiful. there are public campgrounds (and lots of easy squats if you get a local to help show you around) Most smaller town in AK will have some source of public water/showers/laundry because it is not uncommon up here to live without running water.
Food, I am told, is more expensive up here. I have nothing to compare it too, but many restaurants have menus online and you can check out some of those in areas you are considering. you can also shop and cook for yourselves to save money.
Seward has a cool sea life center, good access to day hike trails, possible wildlife includes big land mammals on the trip down and marine mammals and birds all around.
Other ideas. I know Fairbanks looks like a big town on the map, but it is actually a nice size. not too big, you can still easily find camping spots and hiking trails. Not too small, the college in town assures us a good supply of cheaper restaurants serving college student type fare. We also have great thai food (go figure) And there is the museum and really good live local music.
Choosing Cantwell or Healy or some other small town near Denali park is fun, you will get lots of wildlife. And access to the park, and related activities; hike, raft, bike. But you will also be limited on your dinning and shopping choices and things can be more expensive. Plus the park gets TONS of tourists.
Homer is a great place, but no public transport there. It is still pretty safe to hitch hike (as long as you use common sense). It is another coastal town, but smaller and a little quirkier then Seward. Seems like a lot of artist gravitate toward Homer so you get great music and cool crafts.
And I have not really spent enough time there, but the area around Talkeetna is totally beautiful. Might be worth looking into.
I am trying to keep it to places you can drive to, once you get off the road system the price can go way up, plus the added hassle of getting there. So although they are amazing Kodiak, Ketchican, and Sitka don’t make the list. And other then wildlife, witch it is pretty darn hard to miss in Alaska, I am not sure what you are wanting to do/see. So I hope this is helpful.

Permanent Vacation $14.99 The inaugural release from Munich’s Permanent Vacation label is an eponymous mix CD, compiled by label heads Benjamin Fr?hlich and Tom Bioly, which feels very much as the title suggests: unhurried, luxurious, infinitely lush and relaxing, and warmly indulgent. It essentially embodies the spirit of the eclectic, laid-back, post-disco style of DJing and music-making, termed “balearic” in honor of the Mediterranean vacation spots whence it germinated in the mid-’80s, which was resurgently popular in electronica circles around the mid- to late 2000s. To that end, team Vacation start things off with a nugget from 1984, the Double’s moody, soulful groover “Woman of the World” (which was also revived in the same year on Henrik Schwarz’s like-minded DJ-Kicks mix), progress from there into Joakim’s blippy 2003 rework of French disco mumbler Max Berlin’s 1978 “Elle et Moi,” and Kelly Polar’s luscious, stately “Tyurangalia,” from 2005. And they continue on shuttling back and forth between the decades, taking in forgotten sides from Italo pioneer Alexander Robotnick and Danish cheese-meister Tommy Seebach alongside contemporary luminaries like Lindstrom (under his Six Cups of Rebel alias), and Maurice Fulton (represented by a pair of disparate but equally stimulating remixes). The differences between the vintage cuts and the work of the revivalists, while occasionally evident, are often strikingly hard to discern, which makes this both a cohesive listening experience and a decent argument for the cross-generational continuity of semi-electronic, slow to midtempo European disco music. Fr?hlich and Bioly are not always the most refined of mixers, sometimes executing their transitions with little sense of maintaining momentum, but the music is all so fluid and effortless that it hardly matters. After roughly an hour’s worth of mostly mellow, but quirky and grooving (and generally quite danceable) tracks, none of them overly electronic-feeling, the mix chills out even further with the blissful Belgian bossa nova of Antena and a soothing, sea-themed vocal closer from Denmark’s WhoMadeWho (dating, respectively, from 1982 and 2005 — not that you could tell that by listening.) All told, there is a stunning amount of gorgeousness on display here. Highly recommended to anyone curious about balearic or experimental disco, or anyone in need of a good pleasure cruise. ~ K.
