caribou dream hunt, expenses?
I have always wanted to go to alaska and shoot a caribou. how much would it cost? i have rifle ammo clothing and the basics, but i mean like travel, guide, that kinda thing.
looks like i hit jackpot!
Your in Luck – I am a Certified Alaskan Hunter Safety Instructor.
Non-residents can hunt caribou in Alaska without a guide. You want to drive up here with your rifle and ammo ($50 for the three year Canadian permit to bring your rifle) and a 4×4 atv in the truck bed. Head up the Tailor Highway toward Chicken, Alaska. Park your rig behind the post office – you will see a trail that eveyone else is using that heads out west – take it – it’s the old 40 Mile Gold Jeep Trail. Goes in about 40 miles across the most accessable caribou area you will find from the road.
Usually I go in the day ahead of the season, get up at 4:30am, leave camp at 5am and once on the trail I usually have a nice bull down in under 15 minutes. It is that easy….. if the caribou are ‘in’. They will bypass Chicken every 4th year, some come back year 3, more on year 2, and then a flood of caribou on year 1 – after the flood you don’t see much of any the next year. They do this instinctivly to prevent over graizing.
Canada is a bunch of poop heads. You cannot drive your meat home – they don’t let any uncanned or uncooked meat across the border. Once your get a caribou you will drive to Tok, ice it down – then head for eiether Trapper Creek game processing in Anchorage (350 miles) where they will cut, wrap, freeze and ship it to you. Or, you can cut + wrap it somewhere, and they will freeze and ship. There is a place in Delta Junction (150 miles) and Fairbanks (200 miles) away that will do the same thing – but – you will love the drive to Anchorage better.
If you fly into Anchorage – they have frozen storage facilities at the airport for a few buck a box or cooler. You can’t rent a vehicle and go caribou hunting – all the roads with caribou on them – it is a breach of your rental agreement to go there. Go there and get the rental car/truck hurt – you might end up buying them a new vehicle.
From Anchorage – you can charter a flight into the 5 caribou a day areas. Small plane drops you off and comes back in a few days. Cost varies. This is probalby the best, sure, and easiest way to do this. Keep in mind – anyplace with caribou – also has grizzlies.
Good Luck. You can email me questions.
