Any tips for travelling to Las Vegas?
My husband and I are going to Las Vegas together in the upcoming months and are trying to plan what shows to see and what to do while we’re there. We’re both from Florida and have never been to Nevada, nevermind Las Vegas so this should be a fun experience, especially since we are travelling without our son (it is our year wedding anniversary so this will be a romantic getaway for 4 days just the two of us – longest I’ve ever been away from my little guy though). We want to take a tour to see the grand canyon and lake mead…and hoover dam. If we could do all those on one tour that would be ideal.
If anyone has ever been or has any tips I’d love to hear them. We are thinking of staying at Treasure Island and would love to see one of the Cirque shoes…

I live in Las Vegas, and it is a really just a short distance away from many beautiful places!
The Hoover Dam is very close – only 20 minutes away. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare, but once you get a chance to look at the dam it’s very impressive! You are allowed to walk across it and they let you know when you cross the border to Arizona. You can drive over it, too, if you like.
Lake Mead isn’t really all it’s cracked up to be. On one end, it’s all loud and noisy and party like…and most people on the boats are drunken idiots. And then on the other end it’s like the middle of nowhere with ugly looking water. So I would advise you to skip it.
The Grand Canyon is very nice, although not as impressive as you may think. Everyone suggests the South Rim. However, while the South Rim is beautiful, there is really only one view – you can walk all the way around that side and it won’t look any different. There is nothing to do besides that, so it’s rather a waste of time. North Rim, however, is lovely. The Lodge there is very nice and has a fantastic restaurant (with a view!) and a nice sitting area – there are many trails to hike if you like that or you can just sit down and look over the edge. Also there are many shops to check out in the little village (which is really all just the Lodge, but it does seem like a small town). Also, North Rim is a day trip (Go there in the morning, come back in the late afternoon), while at South Rim you would have to stay there overnight.
If you love seeing things like this, I suggest Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon – they are in Nevada and are not very far away from the strip at all. They make nice day trips, and show beautiful picture perfect scenes. Zion National Park and Death Valley are also day trips from Las Vegas, and the Death Valley Candy Company has the best tasting candy ever! That’s in Beatty. Also, on the way out to Death Valley there’s a ghost town called Rhyolite, which is pretty cool.
Treasure Island is a nice place to stay, although the gambling hall there has an odd scent in it…it’s more smoky than some of the other hotels, and there’s some weird perfume scent that’s not all that pleasant there. Normally I would think it was just someone gambling there but that scent has been there every time I’ve gone!
I’ve seen the Cirque de Soleil – Beatles Love. It was amazing! The only thing I must say about the Cirque shows in general is that they are very active with the audience – no, they don’t pull them out on stage but clowns don’t leave the people on the lower levels alone, and they splash them with water at one of the shows…if you don’t like that kind of thing, I would suggest not going.
The exhibits can be nice things to see, the Titanic exhibit at the Tropicana gives a nice bit of history, and the Bodies exhibit is spectacular…also the wax museum is very nice. And don’t forget to check out the small things – the sharks at Mandalay Bay, the lions at the MGM, the fountains at the Bellagio (that’s free), and the garden at the Mirage. Phantom of the Opera shows at the Venetian – I think it’s even better than the Broadway production! And, of course, if you want a romantic activity, the gondola ride over at the Venetian is really amazing.
Obviously, you won’t be able to see all this in 4 days, but that just means you’ll have to come back sometime!

Leaving Las Vegas - $49.99 Mike Figgis’ grim drama documents a romantic triangle of sorts involving prostitute Sera (Elisabeth Shue), failed Hollywood screenwriter Ben (Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage), and the constant flow of booze which he loves more dearly than life itself. Arriving in Las Vegas with the intention of drinking himself to death, Ben meets Sera, and they gradually begin falling for one another. From the outset, however, Ben warns Sera that no matter what, she can never ask him to quit drinking, a condition to which she grudgingly agrees. A darkly comic tragedy, Leaving Las Vegas charts the brief romantic convergence of two desperately needy people who together find a brief flicker of happiness. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi |
