Can you stop over Cairo City during a cruise in the Mediterranean?
I read that, but I can’t understand, as I thought Cairo wasn’t a coastal city.
While at this, where do Mediterranean cruises usually start, and where do they usually finish? (If it matters, in regard to 2 week cruises).
Many cruise line will advertise cities as a part of their cruises that are not port cities, or located on a coast. In those cases the cruise ship will dock at a location where there will be transportation to that inland city by car, bus or train. For example, cruises that advertise a stop in Rome actually stop in the port city of Civitavecchia and then there is a bus of ride of at least an hour to get to Rome. Last year we went on a cruise that included a port stop in Warnemunde, Germany but the cruise line advertised Berlin as a apart of the cruise. If you wanted to go to Berlin the cruise line arranged a flight or private car/tour bus to take you to Berlin. To accommodate the travel times the ship stayed in port from early morning until almost midnight.
So if you see a cruise advertising Cairo City and Alexandria, the ship will stop at the nearest port and provide tours and/or transportation to the destination city. Several cruise lines like Holland America and Royal Caribbean offer Egypt as a port stop and they can reach Cairo very easily from the Mediterranean Sea.
Mediterranean cruise can start from any one of several ports, including Barcelona Spain; Venice, Italy; Dover, Southampton, and/or Harwich, England; Civitavecchia (Rome) Italy, or Athens, Greece. I have done two 12 day Med cruises both out of Barcelona but I know that there are other longer cruises that leave from a variety of ports around the Mediterranean area. it just depends upon where the cruise is going and your preferences as to where you would depart from.
In addition, Some cruises are round trip, starting and ending in the same port city but there are also some that are one way, like those that start in Venice and end in Rome. The one way cruises are usually the shorter ones and the round trip cruises are usually 12 to 14 days or more.
