Should I take a seasonal job in Alaska?
I have a good, steady, terribly boring office job in my hometown. My boss is great, he even pays for my college classes (don’t be singing his praises yet, it’s just for the tax write-off). The problem is, I’m unhappy. I applied half-seriously as a deck hand for a marine touring company in Alaska and have been offered a job. My family is telling me this is a terrible idea, but I can’t help but think it’s the experience of a life time. Considering the economy, should I listen to my family and possibly regret the decision for the rest of my life? Or take the chance of not having a job when I return?
Keep in mind, I spent four years in the Navy, so I’m not experience-less with ships and open water. I understand that the work is dangerous, but this is a touring company, not a crab boat. It doesn’t come close to the flight deck.
If you don’t have spouse, kids, pets, then DO IT. If nothing else, you can learn from it, make connections, help decide where you want to move next in your life. Alaska isn’t all that people make it up to be, but it isn’t a bad place, either. Tourism work usually doesn’t pay well, but getting paid to go places other people shell out the money for is almost always worthwhile, if you can still afford to pay your bills.
Your family’s concern about the economy is legit, so you have to research and decide whether you think you will have a hard time getting re-hired (or if you even want to get re-hired at the same place or in the same line of work), or re-employed elsewhere. I just spent 5 months unemployed after voluntarily leaving my job in Alaska, but I was never in fear that I wouldn’t find a job, just how long it would take and where.
