Why are airline prices so high and quality so low?
I have been flying my entire life because my parents have lived on the opposite side of the country from each other. I remember when I was a child airline prices were not too bad. Then after 9/11 they dropped dramatically for a long period of time. However over the past two years I have noticed that airline tickets have gone to about 5 or 6 times what they were. The best part about airlines completely destroying us financially is that now the quality is HORRIBLE. No such thing as a inflight meal or movie anymore. They herd you on most of the time with not enough seats so some people are just stuck for NO reason. The greatest part about it is all airlines are this way. There is no competition. I just dont understand why they have to take advantage of people who need to travel. I do have a job and am a full time college student so a week train ride is impossible.
I am sure it is frustrating. We are trying to find cheap tickets ourselves so that my sister and her husband can come visit us. There are multiple reasons why the ticket prices are so high. As someone mentioned, the price of oil actually hit $90 a barrel. Fuel is an airline’s second largest expense after labor. Remember the airline industry lost a lot of money after 9/11. Some airlines went into bankruptcy. Through raising ticket prices, they can recoup some of their loses.
As for service, many people would rather not have a meal and opt for a lower price ticket. The days where people actually got dressed up to go to an airport are long gone. Flying is now just a form of travel to get us from point A to point B.
Airlines used to fly bigger aircraft but now have opted to use more commuter aircraft. Their take is that if they fly smaller jets, they can offer more flights thereby making it more convenient for the traveler. Unfortunately if there is a delay or cancellation of a flight, then those passengers will have to fight for whatever seats remain on the next flight. I think the airlines are trying to sell just enough seats to match demand so that they can maximize their profits.
