Ideal time to visit Canada?
My husband and two of our friends may be planning a trip to Canada in 2013.
Ideally, we want to hire a camper van and drive ourselves. We are also considering popping over to Alaska for a look-see.
I’m interested in seeing some national parks.
My question is what months would be ideal to holiday in Canada/Alaska? You can be as detailed or as vague as you want in your answer. Any little bit helps.
@ Randy – I have two myself. A 4 year old and a soon to be 7 year old. They are awesome dogs!
Taylor, you do realise if this trip happens, we’d only be going to Alaska because of you
P How do you deal with the constant sunshine, even during the normal nighttime hours?
Here in summer, the sun is generally gone by 7.30pm
I live near Dawson City, Yukon. In the summer, we get 10′s of 1000′s of tourists coming through – driving to Fairbanks, Alaska, along the Top of the World Highway, then back along the Alaska Highway to Whitehorse. This makes a nice loop. Fabulous scenery – most of the trip is absolute wilderness. Some go up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, or, at least across the Arctic Circle. Tombstone Park is a Territorial one, but, it is well worth the visit. You go from Boreal Forest, to the sub-alpine environment, to Tundra in about a 1 hour drive (or less).
Constant sunshine is great! I love it… I haven’t even seen a star since early April, although it is now getting kind of dark at night. Not quite dark enough for stars yet… It doesn’t bother me at all.
The trip up from Dawson Creek is great – the area around Muncho Lake is some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen. LOADS of wildlife on the roads up here. So, if you like wilderness and such, I’d highly recommend it. However, some people prefer more settled areas. Then, staying south – a drive from Vancouver to Calgary, then Edmonton, and back would be good. You could even dip into northern Washington State – the Cascade Highway is pretty amazing. The Okanagan is desert, so, going from rain forest to desert is pretty neat.
If you like the big cities, and history, head for Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal. I love Quebec City – it’s the closest you can be to a European feel in North America I think, at least from what I’ve seen. But, for wilderness, wildlife, and scenery, BC, and Yukon are hard to beat.
