Long weekend to Maine Southcoast – where to stay?
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Maine a few times. The area from Kittery to Portland. While I’d love to explore it further, this is the area I can get to for a long weekend (drive up Friday – explore Saturday & Sunday – drive home Monday). We are planning for sometime in July, August, or early September (not over a holiday weekend, though).
I’ve always ended up there for a day when I’ve stayed in Salem, Mass. and that area but this time I want to stay IN Maine and I need some suggestions.
My fiance & I are making it a pre-wedding getaway from the family & planning stresses. B&B’s are awesome. Anywhere with a view of the coast would be great. We’ll be spending most of our time in the car & sightseeing so it doesn’t have to be more than a clean/comfy room.

portland area
my recommendation would be to stay in portland or the surrounding area–most of southern maine is a very short drive and easy to get to from portland BUT you can also get to some of the mid coast regions very quickly from portland too…Popham Beach State Park is only 45 minutes north of portland and is one of the most amazing and unspoiled beaches in all of maine–its where southern sandy maine meets the rocky mid coast maine….you can spend an entire day exploring southern maine and the next day exploring mid coast (popham, reid state park, maybe even boothbay harbor)..
