5-day family vacation this summer to chicago, places to visit?
my parents are talking about going to chicago for maybe 5 days for a short family vacation this summer. it’ll either be later june or late august depending if i get the job i applied for. it’s just me and my parents going, we’ve been there once before but i was only 11 then and we went basically because my dad had a business trip and we turned it into a 3 day getaway. well i’m 16 this summer, don’t really remember what we did our first trip there except for visiting the museums (aquarium, natural history, art) and that’s about it. any more ideas of what to do? any festivals going on this summer? thanks!~
and we will be staying in a hotel downtown too
I may be biased, but you picked a great place to visit! You have so many options. A must is Millennium Park- it’s the one with that huge mirrored bean (“Cloud Gate”), the two water-squirting face towers (Crown Fountain), a nice place to walk nearby with flowers and fountains (Lurie Park), and a huge outdoor pavilion (Jay Pritzker Pavilion) if you want to see a concert outdoors. An even better outdoor concert venue is Ravinia. Although it is outside the city in Highland Park, there’s a train from the city you could take to get there. Other events include Lollapalooza which is in early August, the Blues Festival in June, Taste of Chicago (a food festival) in late June, the Air and Water show in August, Cubs and Sox games, and a ton of street fairs with live music all summer long. Explorechicago.org is a great website to visit if you want to search more extensively for all your options. A great place for walking, shopping, and sight-seeing is Michigan Avenue. If you end up there make sure to check out Water Tower Place- it’s a mall situated at the bottom the John Hancock Building and right across the street from the original Water Tower. Inside of Water Tower Place on the first floor there’s a plae to eat called Wow Bao. I don’t know how exactly to describe it but it’s good! A must have. If you continue to walk north on Michigan Ave. from there, you’ll hit Oak Street Beach, which is by far my favorite. Another good beach is North Ave. There are A TON of great places to eat that have been featured in articles, TV, etc. so I’m sure Google could help you find a place that you love.
