Rome offers art lovers visiting Rome between Christmas 2010 and spring 2011 an remarkable array of top quality exhibitions ranging from Van Gogh to Italian contemporary art, from Palazzo Farnese Renaissance art to Pablo Echaurren, from the exotic Teotihucan City of Gods to the Golden treasures on show from the National History Museum of Bucharest. The most remarkable exhibition this winter seems the one held at the Palazzo Farnese, now home to the French Embassy in Italy, hosting the Farnese Palace between art and politics to discover the colorful history of the “fasti farnesiani” and the building’s 500 years of history.
The doors of Rome’s Palazzo Farnese just opened last week on December 17th for a memorable exhibition to celebrate the Farnese building’s 500 years of history: from the Renaissance to the French Embassy. The most monumental of Rome’s many Renaissance palaces, it was designed for the Farnese family in 1517 and greatly expanded when Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III in 1534. Built and decorated by the most prominent architects and artists of the 16th century, including Michelangelo who redesigned the courtyard and the elegant third floor with projecting cornice casting a deep shadow over the facade, Palazzo Farnese also a famous collection of art and masterpieces including the famous sculpture from Greco-Roman antiquity known as the Farnese Hercules, paintings and frescoes, precious stones and other treasures. Most of the Farnese collection ended up at the National Archeological Museum and at the Capodimonte Museum both in Naples but are now on loan back in Rome for the exhibit to be displayed on their original Renaissance rooms and gardens. The Louvre, Chambord and Ecouen museums in France along with other international art galleries have also contributed to the 150 paintings, statues, drawings, tapestries and coins included in this remarkable exhibition that runs until April 27, 2011.
All guests willing to visit the Farnese exhibition must be aware that advance reservation is required to visit the exhibition.
