Which Maui airport should I fly in to?
What’s the difference between flying into Kahului vs. Hana? Is there an advantage to Hana? I’m wondering because flights to Kahului seem to be cheaper, by at least $100… Anyone know why and if it really matters where I fly into?
There are about 3000 people, a two-lane highway (except for the bridges, those are one-lane) and one K-12 school on the Hana side of Maui. If you want a two or three hour drive to get anywhere else, because everything you want to do is in Hana, fly into Hana. There are no jets that fly into Hana, but there’s a good chance that the pilot of your 9-seat plane will walk you to the gate. Which is literally a gate, a white picket gate.
The good news is, the one rental car place is about ten steps from the gate, if you’ve called ahead. If you haven’t, well, I’m sorry you found yourself in that situation. But if you have called ahead, the car is probably about 15 steps farther, and you may see the plane tht brought you take off while you are getting into the rental car. There will be no crowds to get in your way.
If you want to be closer to hotels, restaurants, stores, as well as more than one gas station, bank, ATM, or rental car company, you’ll want to fly into Kahului (OGG).
