You will have to check the terms and conditions of your ticket. If the ticket has a no change/no refund conditions, you are out of luck. If you don’t use the ticket, your money is gone.

However, what some airlines do, will hold the cost of your ticket as a credit for you, should you decide to travel a later date, and apply the amount against any new tickets you may wish to buy. This is only good for a year, as that is the normal validity for plane tickets, unless otherwise specified under the terms and conditions of the ticket that you have bought.

If the ticket is refundable, then you will get your money back, minus the cost of processing your refund, which could be anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the value of the ticket.

Whether or not you have money in your bank account, the airline does not care. If there is a deadline for you to buy the ticket before you travel (for example the ticket has to be paid for two weeks before you travel, or maybe three days after you book the reservation), and you fail to do so, then your reservation will be automatically cancelled.

The best thing you can do is call the airline you booked with, give them the reservation file number of your reservation so they can retrieve your file, and then they can tell you what type of fare you have, and what the restrictions are concerning that type of fare.
