Where is the Danish port for Baltic Sea Cruises?

Copenhagen Denmark

Copenhagen, founded in 1167 and located in Eastern Denmark and on the islands of Zealand and Amager, is at the southern end of The Sound. Copenhagen is the largest city in Scandinavia and separates the Kattegat and the North Sea from the Baltic. Denmark is a cosmopolitan capital with plenty of charm. Home to the beautiful settings of’ historic Christianborg and Amelienborg Palaces, cafes, the streets of Stroget, and the old Nyhavn harbour’s restaurants. Enjoy a ride on a sightseeing boat and explore the Canals via the waterways. There are many options for sightseeing boat tour some with commentary. kayak, or admire the view from a waterfront cafe. Whatever your choice, this city is a perfect cruise port of call. Copenhagen once a fishing village until the middle of the 12th century and then later became a place of commercial importance. The city was repeatedly attacked by the Hanseatic towns. Chosen as the capital in 1443 by Christopher III. During the Napoleonic Wars of 1801, a British flotilla, commanded by Horatio Nelson, destroyed a Danish fleet in the harbour of Copenhagen harbour. In 1807 British Navy vessels bombarded the city to prevent Denmark from having to surrender its fleet to Napoleon. Denmark joined the European Union in 1973.

Copenhagen is one of the most warm and inviting cities in existence. A picture of this quaint city includes cobblestone streets, a few towering skyscrapers and friendly people that will greet you at every turn. This is very unlike the typical hot pavement and traffic-covered streets that are usually associated with a major city. Copenhagen is truly a fairy-tale town where pollution does not exist but the sweet scent of bakeries envelopes the area instead. Copenhagen is part cosmopolitan city and part small town that has plenty to offer its visitors. This is the political, financial and cultural capital of Denmark that 1.5 million people call home. Museums, historical sights, cafés, and the most delicious restaurants abound here. The day will captivate you and the night will intrigue you, so do not plan to go to sleep early. Go crazy and live it up at the many clubs and bars, or have a cappuccino while watching a magnificent sunset.

Copenhagen has quite a tumultuous history, starting in 1157, when Valdemar the Great gave it to Bishop Absalon. Before this transition year, Copenhagen was just a simple fishing town. Bishop Absalon built a castle here, which is now Christianborg Palace. Copenhagen grew to be a great center as a Baltic trade route, and in the 15th century, the town became the royal residence and the capital of Norway and Sweden. Walking around Copenhagen today, one will be able to see beautiful castles and towers that date back to the 16th century and the rule of Christian IV. This king was enamored of fine architecture, which resulted in a wealth of construction that still marvels visitors today. We are quite lucky Christian IV built up the city as much as he did, because some of the buildings from his time are the only historical landmarks that survived two major fires in the 18th century, as well as the bombings by Lord Nelson during the Napoleonic Wars.

A sweet lull of peace sweeps over Denmark now, which disguises Copenhagen’s difficult history. It is a colorful town brought to life by street musicians and performers on every corner. Delight your eyes with the lights that illuminate these same streets at night, and take a stroll along a drawbridge over one of the many canals. It is impossible not to fall in love with this seafaring city.
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Copenhagen (7 Nordre Toldbod.) Taxis are always lined up to take you into the heart of this glorious city. The sights alongthe harbor are all accessible from the cruise ship pier. Taxis are also available.Local Transportation in Copenhagen is known for its flat terrain, and since most of the sights are within one square mile of the center, a wonderful option for transportation is the bicycle. It’s a great way to get around and make your own schedule. Bikes are very easy to rent in various spots throughout the city. Like every city, the taxi is always a very easy way to get around. One can be picked up at the main train station or at the taxi stands. A great company to contact to arrange for taxi service ahead of time is Copenhagen Taxi (31/35-35-35). You can also take water taxis to shuttle you around the harbor region of Copenhagen. The city’s extensive public transport system comprises a metro rail network called S-train, with 10 lines passing through Central Station, and a bus system called HT (or Hovedstadsomradets Trafikselskab for those who like tongue-twisters) that uses Radhuspladsen as its main terminal. Fares for both are charged according to a zone system, with a variety of single, multiple-ride or daily tickets available. The Copenhagen Tourist Information Center, Bernstorffsgade 1 (tel. 33-25-38-44; ), across from Tivoli’s main entrance, dispenses information. It’s open in July and August, daily 8am to 11pm; May, June, and September 1 to 15, daily 9am to 9pm; and September 16 to April, Monday to Friday 9am to 4:30pm and Saturday 9am to 1:30pm.
