alaska vacation?
anyone stayed in alaska for a winter vacation? where did you stay and any advice? i dont know if we’d rather go to canada or alaska? we want a nice cozy cabin-like, picturesque getaway. wheres the best place for auroras? my bf and I just wanna go somewhere gorgeous and comfortable? he likes to go fly-fishing or maybe chill out and go snowboarding…..its all up in the air on what we wanna do. anybody wanna lend me their experiences and advice?? gotta have a little nightlife also….so somewhere within decent distance to town would be great?
I haven’t spent the Winter in Alaska, but I drove up in the snow last year. We left Florida in early April, arrived in Alaska in mid May and believe it or not, we drove through a snow storm.
If, Talkeetna, is open through the Winter this would be a wonderful place. Talkeetna is a small village about 100 mile South of Denali National Park. Princess Cruise Lines runs trains through there. They even have a hotel in town for their guests. If their hotel won’t accept outside patrons, there is an older, rustic hotel that would be a romantic getaway.
Princess also has a large lodge just outside of the Denali entrance. In the heavy snows of Winter, these sites may be too much.
Try www.alaska.com/plan/visitors_guide/ for rentals. If what you like isn’t here, sign-up for e-mails from everyone on this site and all the links. My wife & I did this when planning our Alaskan trip. Getting off their e-mail lists are a breeze.
Fishing, at least fly fishing is best in the spring and summer when the salmon are running.
If you insist on going up during the winter you should stay in the large coastal towns such as Anchorage and Juneau. These two towns are in totally different areas, with Juneau being accessable only by air or boat.
I have been told by the locals that the roads are best driven in the winter. The snow is packed hard and you don’t have the frost heaves that are ever present when the snow melts.
We spent 5 wonderful months in Alaska and plan on returning. We traveled in our motorhome, parked where we wanted and really enjoyed it. We used very few campgrounds, only when we needed to do laundry. There are so many rest stops out in the boondocks, with wonderful views, that we parked there.
