Apples are in 1/4 of all the lunch bags that are distributed at a school picnic, and bananas are in 1/3 of the lunch bags. What’s the probability of randomly choosing a lunch bag that contains either an apple or a banana?

1. if you have a probability question, just pick a number that fits the equation. since its a ratio it will always work. if you aren’t sure what both of your numbers will divide into, just multiply them together and use that number.

12 can be divided into thirds and fourths. 1/4 of 12 is 3, and 1/3 is 4. that means that 7 out of twelve bags have an apple or a banana. your answer is 7/12.

2. when usin percents, always start at 100. it’s the easiest to work with.

if 100 senior citizens won vacations, 25 of them (25%) got bermuda, 60 of them (60%) got alaska, and 15 (15%) got costa rica. add the number of people who got costa rica and bermuda together and divide by the total number of people (100). then simplify into the lowest possible terms. 25+15=40. 40/100=4/10=2/5. your answer is 2/5.

3. for dice, just find out how many times it is possible for each action to happen and divide it by the number sides on the die.

a die has only one 3 and one 6, so the answer is 2/6 or 1/3.

this encompasses all sides of the die, so the probability is 6/6 or 1.

i’m not quite sure on this one, but it should still be 3/6 or 1/2.

there are three odds on a die, and one even number greater than 4, so it should be 4/6 or 2/3. but i could be wrong on this one.

final note: most probabilities can be solved by fitting them into a simple number. the rest just need to be visualized until you get the idea.
