chances of surviving a stroke?
o wanna know the statistics of stroke survival. my grandpa had one today and he is 86. He is like the healthiest guy i know he has never smoked and drinks only on special occasions. so yea i just want a bunch of stoke information like if he does survive how long it will take to recover. i mean i realize it is when it is his time it is his time. the only reason i am asking this is cause my present to my grandparents for christmas was a two week cruise to Alaska it was supposed to be like there last little vacation together, but now even is he doesn’t pass away he still wont be able to go will he?? it is scheduled for the 27th
ok here are some more details umm it was a hemoragic or somthing and they are doing surgery to stop the bleeding
“chances of surviving a stroke? o wanna know the statistics of stroke survival.” — I’m truly sorry for your grandfather. Chances of survival are good as long as he doesn’t have a second more severe stroke while in the hospital. The risk of a recurrent strokes in greatest immediately after a stroke and in the first 5 years after the initial stroke.
“so yea i just want a bunch of stoke information like if he does survive how long it will take to recover.” — There are two types of stroke (brain attack) — Hemorhagic and ischemic. We also still call them CVAs, cerebrovascular accidents. Hemorrhagic CVAs are bleeding strokes and occur when there is bleeding inside the brain or between the membranes that surround the brain. Ischemic CVAs occur when blood is suddenly cut off from the brain. And sometimes included in types of CVAs are TIAs. These are transient ischemic attacks. These have been called “mini strokes” and are a fairly reliable predictor of a future CVA. It may be that, despite your grandfather’s seemingly sterling health history, he may have been having TIAs and ignored them.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict how severe a CVA will be or what parts of the brain will be affected. This can be assessed only after the fact. Once your grandfather is deemed stable, assessment on an ongoing basis can begin and a neurologist can ascertain how severe it likely was.
I have many patients who survived a CVA but survival doesn’t begin to explain things. Most of my CVA patients, whether a result of trauma or disease process, are without exception on ventilators or other airway support. Most are comatose or vegetative. Most of the remainder are alert but confused and need restraints. They are of all adult ages, young, old and in between and will never recover from the extensive brain damage nor know a meaningful life but they survived. On the other hand, a fellow nurse had a mild CVA and had no lasting effects at all. She’s back on duty for almost a year now. I have no way to know about your grandfather. If he’s in a coma, only time will tell if he will come out it. But after 3 months, the chances lessen and the longer some one remains comatose, the less likely they are to come out of it. However, if your grandfather comes out of the coma, he may be vegetative. If he comes out of that, he’ll be confused. If he comes out of that, he’ll be grandpa but he may have memory loss or some other permanent neurological damage. The damage could be mild, it could be major, it could be somewhere midway. There’s no way to predict his recovery or the course of it — depends on the extent and type of damage. He may be evaluated for PT/OT and if he’s a candidate for occupational and physical therapy, he’ll receive services. If he has to have a tracheostomy tube placed and be put on airway support of some kind, he’ll have to remain in ICU, acute or transitional care and then sub-acute care until he can be decannulated, which is the term for weaning a patient off the trach tube and then finally removing it altogether. During this time, speech therapy will work with him and decide if he should have tests to determine if he can start eating by mouth again. But again, what services he needs depends on the extent of the damage. Worst case scenario, he’ll need only respiratory, medical and nursing. The more services from the more departments he needs, the better off he is, understand?
This cruise is scheduled for the 27th of December? Call the travel agent or cruise ship line immediately (whoever you booked it through) and explain the situation. Perhaps something can be done so you aren’t penalized for a cancellation. Unless the CVA was very mild, I don’t believe your grandfather is going to be in any kind of shape to do this.
You wanted a “bunch of stroke information” and I’ve overwhelmed you with it. I work with very ill patients, the majority of whom have sustained brain damage, they range from gun shot wounds to suicide attempts, to hypertensive (hemorrhagic) CVAs, to motor vehicle accidents to cardiac arrest (ischemic CVA) to drug overdoses, you name it, I got it, and certainly they don’t all survive. If at any time you need to know more, please feel free to contact me. I’m working Christmas Day and I’ll say a prayer for your grandfather and your family.
