road trip to alaska?

am planning on a 3000 mile rroad trip to the capital of alaska, from san fracisco…am crazy… what are some locations i can stop and visit on the way? any opinions….
its gona be california,oregon,washington,canada,and alaska..
and tips….
and then to anchorage

We did a 10,000 mile trip this summer from New York Ctiy. We’re crazy, too…but we loved it! First of all, Juneau has no road access. If you’re going there, go by ferry. We spent most of our time between Fairbanks, Denali National Park, Anchorage, and Seward. ALL are highly recommended, but especially Denali and Seward. We did not get to visit Juneau.

What time of year? How much time do you have on the road? I can suggest fast ways, I can suggest more time-consuming scenic ways. So, when are you doing this, and for how long?

One HUGE tip: get a copy of the Milepost. It’s a great guide about the Alaska Highway and a bunch of other roads up that way. It’s like the Alaska Highway Bible. Just DO it.

From San Francisco, I’m figuring I-5 through the border, then you have some options; you can get to BC 97 up to the Alaska Highway from Fort St. John or Dawson Creek, or go up around Banff/Jasper, get up to Grande Prairie, and Alaska Highway from there.

If you want to visit Juneau in particular, you can go up from Vancouver or a number of other places along the BC coast, or you can drive up along the Alaska Highway, drop down from a little east of Whitehorse, and head down to Skagway and Haines, taking a ferry from there.

Within reach along the way are Glacier/Waterton Lakes International Peace Park (that might be out of the way), Seattle/Vancouver (both are very nice), and some great National Parks through Oregon and Washington. However, these are all fairly close places, maybe you can do those another time or if you have some time to kill. I strongly recommend saving as much time as you can for Alaska itself.

Banff/Jasper Parks in Alberta/BC are very nice, though they might be a bit out of the way. The drive up the Alaska Highway is a scenic run in and of itself, and the Milepost will give you hints on some of the “little things” along the way. If you have time, you can poke around Whitehorse a bit.

Up in Fairbanks, there are plenty of fun things to do, some have a touristy feel. Denali National Park, spend at least a full day there. Even if Mount McKinley is buried in clouds, the scenery and wildlife of the rest of the park makes it worth the visit. In Seward, go to the SeaLife Center, some great stuff there. Same with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center between Anchorage and Seward. Also from Seward, there are some nice Kenai Fjords boat tours. Be warned, though, they might bump and jostle you a bit, depending on the weather and sea conditions.

This is a GREAT trip. I can elaborate more on any specifics you might have questions about. I’ve also elaborated MUCH more in the link I’ve sent you.

Enjoy the trip!
