When is the best month to visit Alaska?

We are thinking for Vacation in Alaska and would like to know when is the best time to visit ( best weather). We like out door activities in nature and like to visit different places. Should we go on our own fly there, book hotel and .,….. or the best is to take a cruse. I don’t mind to rent a car and drive. Can you also tell me which city, area is the best place to visit also.?
I will really appreciate if you have any web or travel tour suggestion.

We went in June of this year. My finance lived there for 25 years while in the service. We flew into Anchorage and rented an RV. We spent a week, which was only long enough to make me pine for more! Must see places: Seward, Denali. Highlight of the trip was the Wildlife Cruise Day trip out of Seward. My finance said even he was amazed – he “thought” he knew Alaska after living there so long, but the boat was able to take us to places you’d never see from land … glaciers, wildlife, etc…. Was AMAZING – I can’t recommend this enough!!! We went with Kenai Fjords, but there are a couple companys that do this in downtown Seward … just google it. June was the best month, because it’s before the fishermen come out and clog up traffic and the rivers, the mosquitoes were there but not as bad as later in the summer, and it wasn’t too cold, not to hot. Next trip I want to go to Fairbanks and take the train to ANC, and explore more of the small towns.

I think doing it on your own is the best – although I love cruise ships, you just can’t see the guts of the amazing beautiful towns on a ship – you can only skim the surface.

Another must is getting the “Milepost”. It’s an Alaskan Bible……..tells you mile by mile what to see and how to plan your trip. YOU HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK!! I think you can order it from Amazon … even if you decide to take a cruise, this book will tell you about so many things to do and see….
