Good travel destination in Alaska/North Canada? ?
What are the must see places, and other interesting stuff in Alaska. I would like to visit Alaska or North Canada, i like beautiful wild nature of north and mountains.. How are accommodations and roads? I would prefer rent car etc, and PLS, no tourist attractions. More likely self-motivated and active stuff like hiking and exploring!
Getting to Alaska can be expensive. It depends on where you stay, but there are many hotels or B&B’s that run around $100 a night. It can be expensive here compared to other places, but its not too bad.
It is very possible to visit in the winter. One of Alaska’s biggest attractions is the winter sports. Several of Alaska’s cities have ski resorts. In and around the bigger cities the roads are kept as clear as possible. Its usually not a problem. The only stores that are closed in the winter, are the tourist type shops that you said you wish to avoid. There is wildlife all around alaska.. That what of the great things about it, but yes you do have to be cautious,
Alaska is more civilized the most people think. There are so many things to do summer or winter. All you have to do is search google and you will see. I have worked for a helicopter company in alaska for 3 years, and grew up in Juneau. Alaska is more remote then your average place, but in and around the cities, you’ll have to problem with your cell phone. Or even though you are out of cell range does not mean you are away from some of the smaller towns with a lot to offer.
There are many things here that can be considered touristy, that are actually the best way to see the state. Helicopter tours are truly amazing. All these tours can be found on a smaller scale. Don’t want to go whale watching with 100 other people? Find a smaller operator.
I would really recommend alaska. Skagway and Juneau have their historical value. In Juneau hike right onto the Mendenhall glacier.
