What’s the percentage of people that own planes in Alaska?
We went to Alaska over the summer and were on a train to the cruise ship and we passed a neighborhood. In the back of the lawns there was a landing and taking off strip for planes and a lot of the houses had an airplane in there backyard. The tour guide on the train said some percentage of people own a plane in Alaska. It was a big percentage though and not just a small one. I was just trying to remeber what it was but I can’t.
Planes per person is 1 plane per 60 people (1.6%). Some people own more than one plane, remember.
Pilots per population is 1 per 61 people (1.6%), highest of any state. And therefore highest in the world. But not all pilots own a plane. The average for the USA is 1 in 400.
Based on the dozens of pilots I know (I’m a member of the Experimental Aircraft Assocation and know a lot of other pilots), and their average number of planes per plane owner (1.4-1.5), I’d estimate 1 in 90 (1.1%) own at least one plane.
As Aaron points out, the ratio is much smaller in a big city like Anchorage. Closer to the USA average. And much larger in a small town (mine is 6,000 people). In some smaller communities, populations of 20-150 people, the ratio would be more like 1 in 5 if it has a lot of whites (who tend to be richer than natives in villages) to 1 in 20 for a more typical small Alaskan town.
