Is a UK passport an absolute neccessity for a UK citizen? I currently have no intention to travel abroad.?

If you needed a passport within the country it would be an ID card. Which the Government is threatening to introduce.
ID cards are a really bad idea. The people they are meant to stop can easily get around them, whilst for ordinary people they are distasteful “big brother” systems. This is particularly so since the UK Government is proposing to combine the ID card itself with huge computer systems for which they intend to force you to give personal data including fingerprints, and to record information such as your visits to the doctor and bank transactions.
The cost of the proposed ID card system is huge(of the order of £10s of billions of pounds, given the usual overrruns) and there would be more cost-efficient ways of addressing problems such as terrorism and illegal immigration. Even the current Government is getting concerned about this cost.
